Become an Employee

We hire EMT's at all levels.  EMT-Basics and EMT-Intermediates are hired with the expectation that they will progress to the Paramedic level.  The minimum staffing of all ambulances is an EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate with an EMT-Paramedic.  We offer a competitive starting salary and an excellent benefit package.

APPLICANT SELECTION

The goal of our hiring process is to give all applicants an equal opportunity at employment while selecting the most qualified candidates.  Applications are received by the Beaufort County Employee Services Division and forwarded to our department in a batch following the close of the current application deadline.  After review for completeness and minimal current certification level, we contact all applicants by phone or mail for notification of a test date.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to keep the Beaufort County Employee Services Division, as well as our department, advised of any changes in address or phone.  Testing includes a written test and a practical test, both taken from the National Standard Curriculum at the appropriate EMT level.  The practical testing includes practical stations covering medical and trauma scenarios.  Additionally, applicants will be tested with a recording manikin in CPR.  The testing is scheduled on an as needed basis and if you are unable to make the scheduled dates, there are no alternate days.  Applicants who successfully complete the testing phase will then be scheduled for an interview.  The day and time will be given on the last day of testing.  Applicants are requested to also submit a certified driving history and references, along with agreeing to background investigation.

After the testing and selection process is completed, all successful applicants are ranked by the selection committee.

The process is then reviewed for fairness by the County Administration, with the top candidates offered positions.

All new hired employees are hired on a one-year probationary basis.
