Facts about Beaufort County Recyclables
Batteries
Remember all batteries contain toxic and hazardous components requiring proper handling.
Car Batteries should be taken back to the merchant where new battery was purchased or to Drop Off Centers
Rechargable Batteries are taken at all County Drop Off Centers.
- Your club or group may subscribe to the same free program through www.rbrc.org a Non-profit organization which promotes recycling of nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) rechargeable batteries.
Alkaline Batteries commonly known as “flashlight” batteries are non rechargeable and may be safely disposed of with household trash at this time. Some vendors do offer recycling of these batteries at a fee.
Cardboard
Cardboard and fiberboard boxes are major portion of residential waste streams; by recycling we save not only trees but the additional energy it takes to make paper from virgin pulp wood.
Cardboard is accepted at some County Drop Off Centers
- Shanklin, Gate, Lady’s Island, St. Helena, Coffin Point, Pritchardville, Bluffton and Hilton Head
- Cardboard is accepted aboard MCAS Beaufort behind the PX.
Glass
Green, Brown and Clear Glass Containers (not light bulbs or mirrors)
- Rinse out containers and separate by color
- Are accepted at some County Drop Off Centers
- Shanklin, Gate, Lady’s Island, St. Helena, Coffin Point, Pritchardville, Bluffton and Hilton Head
Metals
Metals of all sorts are valuable commodities and may be sold by citizens at local commercial recycling businesses or brought to County Drop Off Centers.
Aluminum and Steel cans are accepted at some County Drop Off Centers
Scrap Metal, Appliances (White Goods) with metal parts such as washers, dryers, stoves, grills, etc. are accepted at four County Drop Off Centers

Oil / Cooking
Used cooking oil is recycled into animal food products and must be free of any non food comtamination
- Bring used cooking oil in the original container with a secure lid and give to attendant
- All Centers
Oyster Shells
Oyster Shells are being recycled and used in vital oyster restoration programs through out the county by SCDNR and other agencies.
- They may be recycled at the Sands in Port Royal, Shanklin Drop off Center and Hunting Island State Park.
Paper

Newspapers All county Drop Off Centers collect newspapers in the Green and Red bins provided by S&P Recycling.

Magazines/Catalogues/Phonebooks may be deposited in themixed paper/cardboard container at County Drop Off Centers

- Magazines and Books may be taken to Beaufort County Libraries for reuse
Plastic
Plastics – Plastics are made from petroleum products and are a valuable item for recycling at this time. By recycling we save petroleum and energy needed to make carpets, new bottles, plastic lumber and other great products.
- Bottles - Recycle only bottles with a #1 or #2 inside the recycling symbol. Remove lids, caps, empty contents and flatten bottles
- Plastic Bags – Store bags are NOT accepted at County Drop Off Centers. You may take them to your grocery store and place in boxes at front.
- Are accepted at some County Convenience Centers

Take to your local Staples Store
Tires
Tires stored in open areas collect water and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes creating a potential health hazard.
- Non-useable tires should be left with/returned to the merchant where replacement tires purchased for proper disposal.
- County residents may bring 4 tires per day to Drop Off Centers for proper disposal
Used Motor Oil and Other Petroleum
- Motor Oil must be free of gasoline, diesel fuel and other petroleum products
- 5 Gallon limit per day
- Are accepted at some County Drop Off Centers
- Big Estate, Gate, Lady’s Island, Lobeco, Shanklin, Sheldon, St. Helena, Bluffton and Hilton Head
- Motor Oil Bottles and Oil Filters, empty bottles and used oil filters
- are accepted at some County Drop Off Centers

- Gasoline /Oil Mixture
