Adult patrons may request books, magazine articles and microfilm through the interlibrary loan service, when those items are not available in the system. Our staff locates these items at libraries throughout the nation.

Items published in the current year are seldom available. In most cases, videocassettes, audio recordings and computer software will NOT be available through interlibrary loan.

Please do not request materials from other Beaufort County Public Library branch locations through interlibrary loan. Instead, place a routing request for these local items at the circulation desk.

Who May Request Interlibrary Loan Items?

Only adult patrons with valid Beaufort County Public Public Library cards are eligible. The requester alone may check out interlibrary loan (spouses, family members, or any other parties may not do so on the requester's behalf).

High school students must ask approval from their media specialists (or headmaster, if the school has no library) to receive materials, and the media specialists will then place the request for the student. The service is not available to younger students.

College students at campuses with libraries must request course-related materials through their colleges.

As with all other library materials, requests for these items must be made in person (no telephone requests by telephone).

How to Request:

Just fill out a card for the type of material needed:

  • BOOK titles (up to four requests at a time)

  • MAGAZINE ARTICLES (limit: six requests at a time)

  • INFORMATION requests on given topics (limit: four at a time).

To avoid delays, please supply the most complete and accurate information possible on the request cards.

Fees:

Lending libraries may impose fees in exceptional cases. These vary and depend on the lending library, but you will not be charged these fees without your prior consent.

Overdue fines are $.50 (fifty cents) per day for each item.

Renewals:

Only materials from the South Carolina State Library and the American Genealogical may be renewed. As with all other library materials, renewals for these items must be made in person (no telephone renewals).

Loan periods for items from all other libraries may not be extended under any circumstances.

How Long a Wait?

We cannot estimate response times for any request. These vary and depend on the lending libraries' staffing and procedures.

Interlibrary loan is an efficient service, but not an "express" option. Lending libraries cannot "rush" requests.
