Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I recycle oyster shells?
You may take your oyster shells to the Shanklin Rd. convenience center. There is a collection area in the back. Ask the attendant to tell you where it is. There is a collection yard at the SANDs boatlanding in Port Royal. Also, Beaufort Marine Institute will pick up your shells. Call (843) 846-2128 for arrangements.

Recycling Costs and Revenue
Costs (not including operating costs of convenience centers):
Processing
Waste Management processes recyclables from the Convenience Centers and Commercial enterprises at their Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located near the Hickory Hill Landfill in Jasper County. Waste Management then markets the processed items. Beaufort County pays $24/ton for processing and is credited with half the revenue received for the materials.
Hauling
Waste Management transports the materials from the Convenience Centers to the MRF. Beaufort County pays from $120/haul to transport the recycling containers to the MRF.
Total Recycling Cost for FY2011: $279,051
