Architectural & Neighborhood Designs
October 10 - 31 Exhibition
City of Beaufort, SC
The Verdier House on Bay Street
THE EXHIBITION
The Beaufort Three-Century Project & Historic Beaufort Foundation are hosting a public exhibition of architecture and community design to complement the City of Beaufort tri-centennial celebration. The exhibit will demonstrate how the valued built forms of Beaufort can be successfully fused with the future requirements for sustainability of energy, water, materials, human ecology and indigenous vegetation. The design categories will include the Single Structure Infill and the Neighborhood Plan – each on one of three pre-selected opportunity sites in historic Beaufort. In addition to cash awards for these two categories, there will be a People's Choice award, as voted by exhibition visitors during the three-week long event.
THE MISSION
The mission for each design entry is to go beyond preservation of the historic inheritance, by addressing the additional goals of sustainability, affordability, residential-commercial balance, and the needs of an aging population. Specific sites were selected for the competition and information packets are available for each site, but for registered exhibitors only.
COMPETITION TYPE
This professional competition is open to architecture and land design professionals & students of those disciplines. Submissions should be physical models, virtual or perspective renderings of single structure infill or community plan models for one of three selected sites in historic Beaufort. Each submission should be accompanied by a specification board headlining the fundamental design principles and sustainable strategies used.
AWARDS
Best Single Structure in Show - $1,000.
Best Community Plan in Show - $1,000.
People’s Choice Award - $1,000.
WHY A PUBLIC DISPLAY OF FORM NOW?
As Beaufort enters its fourth century, it not only must retain and enhance its historic essence while addressing sustainability, there is a third new development concept afoot. Countywide the governments are working to institute a new development ordinance. Known as Form-Based Code, it is designed to effectively preserve and enhance the desired built form. Yet change is often difficult. This public exhibition offers an opportunity for a thoughtful experience of good form ideas with smart improvements. Furthermore, this exhibit will be a part of the popular Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens and will occur while the AIA SC conference is being held locally. This three-week EXPO 2011 is also an official Beaufort Three-Century Project event, and will be promoted to the many followers of B3C offerings.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Submittals may be in several formats. Three dimensional physical models of single structures or neighborhood plans are most easily understood by the public and are encouraged. Also acceptable are perspective renderings drawn for comfortable public comprehension. The display may be accompanied with a laptop looped program for further visual exploration. Note the exhibit space dimensions. [typical exhibit space]. Each design must be based on one of the [selected opportunity sites]. A site specific packet of information will be sent to each registered participant. Other reference materials are [The City of Beaufort Historic District Ordinance] and the [Northwest Quadrant Strategic Plan] for information, but strict compliance is not required for this competition.
