Mission Statement

It is the mission of Beaufort County Disabilities & Special Needs Department to be a unified agency dedicated to empowering the individuals we serve to obtain their maximum potential by developing and providing a network of quality services which promote consumer choice, community involvement, and enhancement of life.

Early Intervention

Beaufort County offers Early Intervention to families with children age birth to 5 years who are developmentally delayed. Early interventionists provide services in the home or day care setting.

Services include:

  • Service Coordination
  • Individualized Family Service Plans
  • Developmental teaching skills
  • Utilization of community networks and resources
  • Empowerment of the family
  • Support for medical and therapist involvement
  • Transition into the school system at age 3, if eligible
  • Help in getting specialized equipment, if needed
  • Respite services for eligible families

Eligibility For Services

Eligible children meet anyone of the following three criteria:

1.         Developmental delay in one of these areas:

  • Cognitive
  • Communication
  • Social or emotional
  • Gross motor
  • Fine Motor
  • Adaptive

2.         A diagnosed condition such as:

  • Down syndrome
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Prematurity (≤ 28 wks)
  • Seizures
  • Autism
  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
  • Spina bifida
  • Low birth weight (≤ 1200 grams)

Lay the Foundation

For children ages birth to three –Families requesting early intervention services must first be referred to BabyNet and, once determined eligible, may choose to receive early intervention services through Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs. (BabyNet 525-4085)
